Can a clutch be repaired or must it be replaced?

Some clutch problems are fixed with a smaller repair, but worn plates cannot be restored, so the answer depends on the fault.

Many drivers hope that a clutch problem can be fixed cheaply without taking the gearbox out. Sometimes that is true, but only when the fault lies in something other than the friction parts themselves.

The clutch system is really two things: the mechanical plates inside the bell housing, and the controls that operate them. Which of those has failed decides whether repair or replacement is the right call.

When can a clutch problem be repaired?

If the plates are fine but the pedal feels wrong, the fault is likely in the controls. A leaking slave cylinder, a failing master cylinder, air in the fluid, a stretched or frayed cable or a worn pedal bush can all cause a pedal that sinks, feels soft or does not release the clutch fully.

These repairs are often smaller than a full clutch job, particularly where the part is outside the gearbox. A cylinder fitted inside the bell housing is a different story, because it may mean the gearbox has to come out anyway.

When must the clutch be replaced?

The driven plate is a friction part. Once the lining has worn thin, it cannot be built back up, and the only fix is a new plate. Because the pressure plate and release bearing wear alongside it, they are normally replaced at the same time.

The same is true if the plates have been burnt, glazed or soaked in oil. Cleaning does not restore the lining reliably, so the advice is replacement, after the source of the oil has been traced and sealed.

What other parts might need attention?

Sometimes the plates are not the culprit at all, or are only part of the story. Look at this list of linked components:

  • Flywheel, which can be scored, cracked or worn internally
  • Release bearing and fork, which can wear or break
  • Gearbox input shaft seal and crankshaft seal, if leaking oil
  • Engine and gearbox mounts, which can cause shudder when worn
  • Cable, master cylinder and slave cylinder

How is the fault diagnosed?

A good diagnosis begins with listening to what you have noticed, then checking the pedal, the fluid level and any leaks, and road testing the vehicle. This often narrows things down before any tools come out.

We would never promise a repair is possible without inspection, because the same symptom can have several causes. Slipping, for instance, may be lining wear or oil contamination, and the repair is different. Where more investigation is needed, we explain why before continuing.

What should you avoid doing meanwhile?

Avoid heavy loads, long hill climbs and holding the car on the clutch. A slipping clutch builds heat quickly and can mark the flywheel, which turns a smaller job into a larger one.

If the car will not select gears, or the pedal drops to the floor and stays there, do not keep driving. Stop somewhere safe, and message us with the details so that we can advise on the next step.

The plates cannot be repaired once worn, but controls such as cylinders and cables often can be. Message We Fit Any Clutch Cornwall with your symptoms for advice and a quote.

Common questions

Is it cheaper to repair than replace?

Where the fault is in a cylinder or cable, a repair can be a smaller job. If the plates are worn, replacing them is the only lasting option. What affects the price depends on the vehicle and what we find.

Can a slipping clutch be adjusted?

On some older cable systems the free play can be adjusted, which may help with minor issues. Once the lining is worn, adjusting will not bring back the grip.

Can a worn driven plate be resurfaced?

Not in a way that is generally reliable. The friction lining is a wear item that is replaced, usually as part of a kit.

Could my problem just be low fluid?

On a hydraulic clutch it can be part of it, but low fluid usually means a leak somewhere that needs finding. Topping up alone may only delay the fault.

How do I know which repair I need?

You do not need to work it out in advance. Describe the symptoms and vehicle when you contact us, and we will explain what is likely and what to check.
