How can you tell if your gearbox is failing?

A failing gearbox usually warns you first through hard gear changes, new noises, leaks or a feeling that power is not reaching the road.

A gearbox is a sealed set of gears, shafts, bearings and selectors that works hard every time you drive. Most gearbox faults start small and get worse, which means that noticing them early can make the difference between a modest repair and a large one.

Below are the signs worth taking seriously, what often lies behind them and what to do. We Fit Any Clutch Cornwall deals with gearbox diagnostics, repairs and replacement, so feel free to message us if any of this sounds familiar.

Is it hard to get into gear?

Stiff, notchy or reluctant gear changes are among the commonest warning signs. In a manual car the cause may be a clutch that is not fully releasing, low or tired gearbox oil, worn synchromesh rings or worn linkage. The first two are cheaper to put right than a damaged gearbox, so it pays to find out which one you have.

If the vehicle will not select gears at all, or the clutch pedal sits on the floor, stop driving and get to a safe place. Pushing on can cause further damage and it is a safety risk.

Are there new noises?

Whining that changes with speed, grinding when changing gear and clunking when pulling away all suggest something inside is wearing. Bearings tend to whine or hum, worn synchromesh grinds, and loose or worn drivetrain parts clunk. Our separate guide on gearbox noises goes into detail.

Noise that appears only in one gear, or only when the gearbox is warm, is useful information for the mechanic.

Is the vehicle slipping out of gear or losing power?

A gearbox that jumps out of gear, particularly on a lift-off or under load, may have worn selector parts or worn gear teeth. In an automatic, slipping between gears, delayed engagement or a flare in engine revs when it shifts can suggest low fluid, worn internal clutches or a control problem.

Do not assume it is the clutch just because the symptoms feel similar. A proper inspection separates a clutch fault from a gearbox fault, and the two are sometimes found together.

Can leaks and smells tell me something?

Oil on the ground under the middle of the vehicle, or a burning smell, can point to a leaking seal or gasket, or to oil that has overheated. Gearbox oil that runs low accelerates wear on everything inside.

A leak found early is often a modest repair. Left alone, it can lead to a failed bearing or damaged gears. Take a look at where the vehicle usually stands and note any marks.

  • Dark or reddish fluid under the vehicle
  • A burnt smell after driving
  • Fluid level that keeps dropping
  • Whining that grows over time

What should I do if I notice these signs?

Make a note of when the symptoms appear: cold or warm, in which gear, at what speed, and whether they are getting worse. Avoid heavy loads, towing or hard driving in the meantime. Check for warning lights on the dashboard.

Then get it looked at. Message us with the vehicle details and what you notice, and the mechanic can advise on next steps. Nothing is certain without inspection, and the right outcome might be a fluid change, a repair, a rebuild or a replacement unit.

Hard shifts, noise, leaks and slipping are all worth acting on early. Message We Fit Any Clutch Cornwall with what you notice for advice or a quote.

Common questions

Can a failing gearbox be repaired?

Sometimes, depending on what has worn and how far the damage has gone. The mechanic has to inspect it before saying whether repair, rebuild or replacement makes sense.

Is it safe to keep driving with a gearbox problem?

Mild symptoms may allow careful driving to a safe place, but a vehicle that will not select gears should not be driven. Delay can turn a small repair into a bigger one.

How do I know if it is the clutch or the gearbox?

Some symptoms overlap, such as difficulty changing gear. A clutch problem often involves the pedal feel or slipping, while a gearbox problem often involves noise or gears jumping out. Inspection confirms it.

Will changing the oil fix it?

It can help if low or old oil is the cause, but it will not repair worn parts. It is worth checking the oil condition as part of finding the fault.

Do automatics fail differently?

They can show slipping, delayed engagement, harsh shifts or warning lights. These need proper diagnosis, as electronics, fluid and mechanical wear may all be involved.
