Stuck in gear or cannot change gear: what to check
If the gearstick will not move, or the car will not go into gear, the clutch or gearbox is the usual suspect.
Being unable to change gear is one of the most worrying faults a driver can meet. The lever may feel locked, crunch or move freely without anything engaging.
The cause can sit in the clutch, the controls that operate it, or the gearbox itself. Here is how to tell them apart, and what is safe to try.
Why will the gearstick not move?
The most common reason is that the clutch is not releasing fully. If the plates stay clamped together, the gearbox shafts keep turning and the gears cannot mesh. The lever feels stiff or the gear crunches.
That points to a problem in the pedal system or at the clutch, such as air in the hydraulics, a failing cylinder or a stretched cable. It can also be a worn driven plate or release bearing.
It is also worth noticing whether the problem is in every gear or just one. A fault confined to a single gear tends to be a worn synchromesh or selector issue, while trouble in all of them while the engine is running points back to the clutch not releasing.
Is it the clutch or the gearbox?
A quick test helps. With the car stationary and the engine running, press the clutch pedal fully and try to select first gear. If it grates or will not go in, but goes in easily with the engine off, the clutch is dragging.
If the pedal feels normal and the lever still cannot move, or it pops out of gear while driving, the gearbox, linkage or selector mechanism may be at fault. Only inspection can confirm which.
Describe exactly what you tried and what happened, as that saves time later.
What other causes are there?
Depending on the symptoms, consider these possibilities:
- Low or old gearbox oil making shifts stiff
- Worn or broken gear linkage or cables
- Worn synchromesh rings, causing crunching into certain gears
- A damaged selector fork or internal gearbox wear
- An electrical or control fault on automated manual gearboxes
What can you try safely?
With the car parked safely, the handbrake on and the engine off, try moving the lever through neutral and then into the gear. If it still will not engage, leave it there rather than experimenting, because guessing at a stuck selector can make matters worse.
Never force the lever. Forcing can bend selector parts or damage the gearbox, turning a smaller job into a larger one.
A short note of when it started, and whether a clutch repair or a gearbox oil change came just before, will help the person diagnosing it. Previous work often explains a new symptom.
When should you stop driving?
If the car will not select gears, or it jumps out of gear under load, stop. Pull over safely and arrange help. Moving the car is a recovery job for a recovery provider.

Common questions
Why does my car crunch going into reverse?
Reverse has no synchromesh on many cars, so a clutch that does not fully release makes it grate. Wait a moment before engaging.
Can low gearbox oil cause stiff gears?
Yes, old or low oil can make shifts notchy. It needs checking, as low oil also suggests a leak.
Will a new clutch cure a stuck gear?
Only if the clutch is the cause. Linkages, cables and the gearbox itself can also be responsible.
Is it OK to keep driving in one gear?
Not as a plan. It limits control and can cause damage. If you cannot get safely home without changing gear, stop and get help.
Can you diagnose it at my home?
