What is included in a clutch replacement?
A proper clutch replacement is more than swapping one worn disc, and it helps to know what should be done and checked.
Drivers are often surprised to learn that the clutch sits between the engine and the gearbox, which means the gearbox usually has to come out to reach it. That is why the job is labour heavy and why it makes sense to do everything properly while it is open.
Here is a plain walk through what a full clutch replacement normally covers, so that when you ask for a quote you know what to compare.
What parts make up a clutch kit?
A standard kit includes the driven plate, the pressure plate (the cover) and the release bearing. Some also include a pilot bearing or fitting bolts, depending on the vehicle.
These parts work as one assembly and wear together, so replacing only one of them tends to cause trouble later. The kit is chosen to suit your make and model, and on some engines it also comes with a replacement flywheel, covered below.
What happens when the gearbox is removed?
The mechanic disconnects the linkage or hydraulics, driveshafts and mounts as needed, then lowers or lifts the gearbox clear. On some vehicles the work is done from underneath, and on others parts of the front end or the exhaust may need to move.
Once the gearbox is out, the old clutch is unbolted and the surfaces behind it can be inspected for oil leaks, wear and heat damage. This is the point where other issues, such as a leaking crankshaft seal, are found.
What gets checked or replaced alongside the kit?
It is common to look at several linked items while access is good:
- Flywheel surface, for scoring, heat marks or cracking
- Dual mass flywheel, if fitted, for play and wear
- Crankshaft and gearbox input shaft seals
- Slave cylinder or concentric slave, on hydraulic systems
- Clutch cable or fluid, where applicable
What happens when it is all refitted?
The new driven plate is aligned with the crankshaft, the pressure plate is tightened in the correct order, and the gearbox is refitted and reconnected. Hydraulic systems are bled so that no air remains in the line.
Afterwards, the pedal feel is checked, a road test confirms smooth take-up and that every gear, including reverse, selects cleanly. A new clutch may need a gentle bedding-in period, and your mechanic will advise how to treat it.
Ask what the quote includes before you agree to it. A clear quote should say whether the flywheel, hydraulic parts and seals are covered or would only be added if inspection shows they are needed, so you are comparing like with like.
What affects the price of a replacement?
There are no figures here because each vehicle differs. The main factors are how difficult the gearbox is to remove, whether the car has a dual mass flywheel, the quality of the kit, and any extra parts the inspection reveals.
Vans and four-wheel-drive models are often more involved than a small hatchback. If you describe your vehicle and its symptoms when you get in touch, we can explain what is likely to be involved before any work starts.
A complete clutch job covers the kit, the surfaces behind it and the hydraulics or cable. To discuss your vehicle, message We Fit Any Clutch Cornwall and we will explain what to expect.

Common questions
How long does a clutch replacement take?
It depends on the vehicle and what is found when the gearbox is out. Some are straightforward, while others take longer, so we would rather talk you through it than promise a time.
Do I need a new flywheel with my new clutch?
Not always. A flywheel in good condition can sometimes be reused or refaced, but a dual mass flywheel with wear is normally replaced. It is judged on inspection.
Can you fit a clutch at my home?
We offer mobile clutch fitting for many vehicles, subject to the job and the space available. Message us with your vehicle and location to find out.
Is it worth choosing the lowest-priced kit?
Quality matters, because a poor kit can judder or wear early and the labour is the same either way. We would suggest a kit suited to your vehicle and how you use it.
Will my gearbox need work too?
Often not, but the gearbox is inspected while it is out. If leaks or wear show up, we would tell you before going further.
