When is a workshop better than a mobile visit?

A job moves to a workshop when safety, space, equipment or the nature of the repair make a driveway the wrong place to do it properly.

Mobile mechanics earn their keep through convenience, but good ones also know when to say no. Doing a job in unsuitable conditions can risk safety and quality.

This article explains how We Fit Any Clutch Cornwall decides when a job needs more than a visit, and what happens then.

What makes a workshop the sensible choice?

Four things decide it: safety, space, equipment and the type of repair. If the vehicle cannot be supported safely, if there is no firm level ground, if the job needs equipment that cannot travel, or if the repair is better done on a clean bench, a workshop wins.

None of this is a judgement of your vehicle or location. It is simply being realistic.

  • Unsafe or unsuitable ground
  • Not enough working room
  • Need for large fixed equipment
  • Repairs suited to a bench

Which jobs commonly need a workshop?

Internal gearbox rebuilds are the obvious example, since they need the unit stripped and assembled in clean conditions. Vehicles that need the engine and subframe lowered to reach the gearbox are another. Complicated faults that need extended testing or several repairs together can also be easier with the vehicle in one place.

Even then, the gearbox may be removed at your location and taken away for repair, depending on circumstances.

Can bad weather change the plan?

It can. Rain makes working under a vehicle unpleasant and sometimes unsafe, and wind and cold affect fluids and handling of parts. A covered or indoor space may fix the problem. Otherwise, the work may be rescheduled.

Cornwall's changeable weather makes this a practical point, so flexibility helps.

What if my vehicle cannot be driven?

A vehicle that will not select gears, or has a clutch pedal on the floor, should not be driven. In that case the mechanic can come to it if the location suits. If the location is not suitable and the vehicle needs moving, that has to be arranged with a recovery provider, as we do not offer recovery or towing.

Tell us where it is stopped and what happened, and we will talk through the sensible options.

What happens to the vehicle if it has to go to a workshop?

Moving a vehicle that can still be driven safely is straightforward. If it cannot be driven, you would arrange recovery with a recovery provider, since that is outside what we do. Tell us about the situation and the mechanic will help you work out the simplest route.

If only the gearbox needs to travel, the mechanic may be able to remove it at your location and take it away, which can avoid moving the whole vehicle. This depends on the job and is confirmed on inspection.

How is the decision made?

It begins with the details you send: vehicle, symptoms and location. The mechanic can often give an early view, then confirm on inspection. If conditions on the day are wrong, you will be told plainly.

Nothing is promised without inspection, and you will not be pushed into a job in unsuitable conditions. If you are unsure, send a photo of the space and a short description, which helps a lot. Message us to talk it over.

Common questions

Will I be told in advance if it needs a workshop?

We try to, from the details you give. Sometimes it only becomes clear on inspection, and you will be told straight away.

Do I pay for a visit that cannot go ahead?

Ask when you message so that expectations are clear before anyone travels.

Can part of the job still be done at my home?

Sometimes. The gearbox may be removed on site and repaired elsewhere, depending on the job.

Is a workshop job lower quality?

Not at all. A workshop is simply a better setting for some repairs.

What should I do if the vehicle is unsafe to drive?

Stop in a safe place and message us the location. Do not keep driving a vehicle that will not select gears.
