Automatic Gearbox Problems: Symptoms, Causes and What Can Be Done

Automatic gearbox faults usually show up as slipping, harsh or delayed shifts, warning lights or fluid problems, and early diagnosis tends to limit the damage.

A conventional automatic uses a torque converter, planetary gear sets, clutch packs and a hydraulic valve body, all controlled by an electronic unit. When something drifts out of tune you notice it in how the car changes gear.

This guide covers the usual symptoms, what lies behind them and the sensible steps to take before a small fault becomes a large one.

What are the common symptoms of an automatic gearbox fault?

Automatics are designed to be seamless, so anything noticeably different deserves attention.

  • Delay when moving the selector into drive or reverse
  • Revs rising without the car accelerating, which suggests slipping
  • Harsh or jerky shifts, or a bang into gear
  • Gearbox warning light or limp-home mode
  • Whining, humming or burning smells
  • Fluid leaking under the car

Why does fluid matter so much?

Automatic fluid does several jobs at once: it lubricates, cools and carries hydraulic pressure that engages the clutch packs. Low, old or burnt fluid reduces pressure and increases wear, and worn friction material then contaminates the fluid further.

Some manufacturers describe their fluid as lifetime fill, but in practice condition and servicing intervals vary by vehicle. Checking level, colour and smell is a useful sign, though not every modern gearbox has a dipstick. Take advice before topping up, because the wrong fluid type can cause new faults.

Driving habits influence how long an automatic stays healthy. Towing, repeated hard acceleration, rolling forward before the car has fully stopped when changing between drive and reverse, and long periods in heavy traffic all add heat. Cornwall brings its own stresses, from steep lanes to holiday queues, so it is worth paying attention to how the car feels when it is hot and working hard, not just on a cold morning.

Could it be electronics or a sensor instead?

Often. Modern gearboxes depend on speed sensors, solenoids and a control unit. A faulty solenoid can cause harsh changes, a stuck gear or limp mode, while a sensor fault can confuse shift timing. Fault codes read with a diagnostic tool point towards the area but do not name the failed part on their own.

This is why we start with fault finding rather than a quote for a rebuild. A fault that appears mechanical may turn out to be electrical, and the reverse can happen too.

Is it safe to keep driving with an automatic fault?

Limp-home mode is designed to protect the gearbox and gets you off the road, not on a long trip. Repeated slipping generates heat that can wear the clutch packs further. If the car will not engage drive, will not move, or loses drive on a hill or in traffic, pull over safely and do not keep driving.

Recovery is arranged separately with a recovery provider. Once the vehicle is safe, message us the make, model and symptoms and we can advise on the next step.

What repair options are there?

Options range from fluid and filter work, through electronic repairs and sensor or solenoid replacement, to gearbox removal for a rebuild or a replacement unit. The right choice depends on what the diagnosis finds, and we do not promise a particular repair is possible before the car has been inspected.

Cost depends on the gearbox type, vehicle, parts availability and the extent of damage. Taking action early often keeps the job in the smaller end of that range.

It also helps to keep notes. Write down when the fault happens, whether the engine is hot or cold, which gear it affects and whether any warning light appears. That information shortens fault finding and helps us tell a fluid or sensor problem from internal wear.

Automatic faults are easier to fix the earlier they are looked at. Message We Fit Any Clutch Cornwall for a quote or advice.

Common questions

Can an automatic gearbox be repaired?

Often parts can be repaired or replaced, but it depends on what an inspection finds.

Why does my automatic jerk between gears?

Causes include low or worn fluid, a failing solenoid or sensor, or internal wear. Diagnosis is needed to say which.

What does limp mode mean?

The control unit has detected a fault and restricted gear selection to protect the box. The cause needs reading and fixing.

Do automatics need a clutch?

They have internal clutches and a torque converter, but no driver-operated clutch pedal.

Is a fluid change a cure?

Sometimes it helps with mild issues, but it will not repair worn parts.
