Clutch Bite Point Too High or Too Low: What It Is Telling You
The bite point is where the clutch starts to grip, and a change in where it sits on the pedal is an early clue to wear or a hydraulic fault.
Everyone's clutch pedal feels a little different, and that is fine. What matters is a change in where the clutch grips, because the bite point moves for a reason.
This guide explains what a high or low bite point suggests and which checks can be done safely.
What is the bite point?
It is the point in the pedal's travel where the clutch plate begins to touch the flywheel and transmit drive. When you lift the pedal from the floor, nothing happens at first, then the car starts to pull. That moment is the bite point.
Most cars have a bite point somewhere in the middle of the pedal travel when the clutch is healthy. As the plate wears, it tends to creep upwards, so noticing it early gives you time to plan a repair rather than wait for a breakdown.
What does a high bite point mean?
A bite point high up near the top of the pedal travel often means the clutch plate has worn thin, so the pressure plate has to move further before it grips. It can also be caused by air in the hydraulics, a failing master or slave cylinder, or a cable out of adjustment on older cars.
A high bite point plus slip, burning smell or weak pull under load strongly suggests wear, whereas a high bite point with a spongy pedal points more towards hydraulics.
What does a low bite point mean?
A bite point close to the floor means the clutch does not release or grip until the pedal is almost fully pressed. Possible causes include air in the system, a leaking cylinder, a stretched cable or a pedal linkage problem. It can also make it hard to select gears, because the clutch is not fully disengaging when the pedal is pressed.
On some cars a new clutch is fitted and the bite point sits unusually low because of a fault in the hydraulic parts, which is why those are checked at the same time.
What can you check safely yourself?
With the engine off, press the pedal by hand or foot and note whether it is smooth, stiff, sinks or sticks. Check the clutch fluid reservoir level on hydraulic systems, looking for a falling level or dirty, dark fluid. Look under the car for fluid traces, and make sure nothing, such as a loose floor mat, is catching the pedal.
Do not top up with the wrong fluid or keep bleeding the system yourself without knowing the cause, because a leaking cylinder will not be cured that way.
Also notice whether the pedal returns briskly when released. A slow or sticky return can point to a dry pivot, a damaged spring or a hydraulic fault, and it is useful detail to mention when you contact us.
When should you stop driving and get help?
If the pedal drops to the floor and stays there, or the car will not go into gear, do not keep driving. Get to a safe place and use a recovery provider, since recovery is outside our service.

Common questions
Can a bite point change by itself?
It usually changes because something is wearing, leaking or stretching, so it deserves attention.
Is a high bite point dangerous?
It is a warning. Left alone, slip can worsen until the car will not drive properly.
Can I adjust the bite point?
Cable systems can often be adjusted. Hydraulic systems have no adjuster, so the cause must be found.
Does a new clutch fix a low bite point?
Not if the cause is hydraulic, air or linkage.
Does bite point differ between cars?
Yes, and what matters is a change from your own car's normal.
