How mobile clutch fitting works, step by step

Mobile clutch fitting means the mechanic brings the tools and parts to your vehicle instead of you bringing it to a garage.

Replacing a clutch is a big job, so it is fair to wonder how it can be done on a drive or in a car park. The short answer is that the work is the same as in a workshop. The gearbox is separated from the engine, the worn parts come out, new parts go in and everything is put back and tested. The difference is where it happens and how carefully the job is planned beforehand.

We Fit Any Clutch Cornwall travels across Cornwall to cars and vans, so this guide walks through a typical visit, so you know what to expect and what could change the plan.

What happens before the mechanic arrives?

The first step is a conversation. You message us with the make, model and engine of the vehicle, what the clutch is doing and where it is parked. From that we can judge whether the job suits fitting at your location or is better handled elsewhere. Nothing is promised until the vehicle has been looked at, because symptoms such as slipping or a heavy pedal can have causes that are not the clutch at all.

Parts are usually matched to your exact vehicle details, so a registration number or the details on the vehicle documents help a great deal. Getting the right kit first time avoids a wasted visit.

  • Make, model, engine and gearbox type
  • Symptoms and when they started
  • Where the vehicle is parked
  • Whether it still drives

What actually happens to the vehicle during the fit?

The mechanic lifts and supports the vehicle securely, disconnects whatever is needed to free the gearbox, and lowers or slides the gearbox away from the engine. On many vehicles driveshafts, linkages, cables or a hydraulic line also have to be dealt with. Once the gearbox is clear, the clutch cover, the friction plate and usually the release bearing are exposed.

The old parts are removed and the flywheel face is inspected. A flywheel that is scored, overheated or damaged may need replacing, or it can cause a new clutch to judder or wear quickly. Then the new clutch goes on, the gearbox is refitted and the vehicle is put back together.

Why is the flywheel checked at the same time?

The flywheel is the metal disc the clutch presses against. If the old clutch slipped for a long time, heat can mark or harden its surface. Fitting a fresh friction plate against a damaged surface is a false economy, so the face is looked at while everything is apart.

Some vehicles have a dual mass flywheel, which has springs inside to absorb engine vibration. These can wear on their own and are often replaced alongside the clutch. Whether that applies depends entirely on your vehicle, and the mechanic will explain it before any work starts.

What happens at the end of the job?

Once everything is reassembled, fluids are checked, the pedal is tested and the vehicle is road tested. A new clutch needs a gentle running-in period, so you will be advised on how to drive it for a while afterwards. Expect the biting point to feel different from the worn clutch you had before, because the old one had drifted gradually and you had adapted to it.

If anything unexpected was found, such as a leaking engine seal or a worn gearbox part, you will be told before it is dealt with so you can decide what to do.

What can stop a mobile fit going ahead?

Space, ground and vehicle design are the usual limits. A sloping or soft surface, tight parking with no room to work or a vehicle where the engine and gearbox must be lowered out through the bottom can all push a job towards a workshop. Weather matters too, as heavy rain makes working underneath a vehicle harder.

Tell us honestly what the parking situation is. It is far better to plan the right setting from the start than to find out on the day.

  • Very uneven or soft ground
  • Not enough room around the vehicle
  • Parts that need workshop equipment
  • Faults found that are not the clutch

Common questions

Is a mobile clutch fit the same quality as a workshop fit?

The parts and the process are the same. What differs is the setting, so the mechanic will only go ahead where the job can be done properly and safely at your location.

How long will the vehicle be off the road?

It depends on the vehicle, how accessible the gearbox is and whether anything else is found. Ask when you message and the mechanic can give a realistic idea once the details are known.

Do I need to supply the parts?

No, you do not need to source anything yourself. Send the vehicle details and we will talk you through what the job involves and what is being fitted.

Can I stay with the vehicle while it is done?

Most people leave the mechanic to work, but you can ask questions before and after. For safety, keep children and pets well away from the work area.

What if my vehicle will not move?

If it will not select gears or the pedal has dropped to the floor, do not keep driving it. A mobile visit can help because the mechanic comes to wherever it is stranded, though moving it by recovery is a separate matter you would arrange with a recovery provider.
