The A30 and A3074 bring a steady mix of commuters, delivery vans and holiday traffic through Hayle. Anyone heading for Hayle Towans or on to St Ives through Lelant adds to the queues in busy periods. That repeated slow driving is hard on a clutch.

Because many vehicles here carry bikes, boards, luggage or tools, the load is often heavier than the clutch was designed to take day after day. When wear catches up, the failure can arrive suddenly.

What to do first

Before thinking about repairs, make the situation safe. Switch on the hazard lights, brake, apply the handbrake and avoid forcing the gear lever. If the vehicle can still roll and you can steer it to a safe place, such as a side road or a car park, do so slowly without relying on the clutch.

A vehicle that cannot select gears should not be driven. If you are on a main road, move passengers away from the traffic and stand on the verge or pavement.

Being based in Hayle does not allow us to promise response times or attendance times, because we cannot know in advance what is already planned or what the vehicle needs. We will speak plainly about what is possible. Roadside, workshop or recovery

If you are near our base in Canon's Town, there may be a simpler route to getting the vehicle looked at, but it still depends on whether the vehicle can be moved safely. A car that will not select gears cannot be driven there, and may need recovery arranged with another provider.

Where there is room, mobile clutch repair at your home, yard or a quiet car park is often practical. The fault matters as much as the place: a hydraulic fault, a broken cable or a worn plate each need different work.
